Croce Di Giotto - The Crucifix by Giotto Wooden Cross

Wow, talk about timeless. The Crucifix scene pictured here was painted by Giotto somewhere between 1288 and 1289. It has the same shape as the famous San Damiano crucifix, which spoke to St. Francis of Assisi. At the end of each arm of the cross are square panels depicting the Virgin and St. John, each of whom looks inward at the figure of Christ. The image shows Christ's body caught at the moment of the ebbing away of life symbolized by the blood flowing from his limbs.
