St. Rita of Cascia is known as the "Saint of Impossible Causes" for her perseverance in prayer and faith despite a life filled with suffering. She lived a life of wealth as signified by the intricate gold embroidery, but at the cost of great suffering, she earned even greater riches in heaven. After enduring a tumultuous marriage and widowhood, she became a nun and dedicated herself to prayer, eventually receiving the stigmata, a symbol of her deep union with Christ's passion.
Saint Teresa Benedicta of the Cross, or Edith Stein, grew up at the dawn of the 20th century in a Jewish family. As a teen, she became agnostic and it wasn’t until she stayed at a friend’s house that Edith found a copy of the autobiography of Saint Teresa of Avila. This changed everything for her…saints inspire saints. Perhaps she will inspire you.

We love thinking about who saints were before they became who we know them as. For example, who was Mother Seton before she put on the bonnet? Who was Edith Stein before her martyrdom? And who was Saint Faustina before she donned the habit? Answer: they were young women seeking the Lord’s will.

St. Teresa of Avila, born Teresa Sánchez de Cepeda y Ahumada in 1515, had a tumultuous teenage life marked by both spiritual longing and worldly distractions. Growing up in a deeply religious family, she developed an early interest in spirituality, but also struggled with the allure of vanity and materialism. At 16, after a period of poor health and a brief flirtation with secular life, Teresa entered the Carmelite convent in Avila, despite initial resistance from her father. Her teenage years were a mix of rebellion, inner turmoil, and the beginning of a deeper commitment to faith. She would later describe these formative years as a time of spiritual dryness, but they laid the foundation for her later mystical experiences and profound theological writings.
We pray these socks remind you that you still have a long journey ahead, and it’s never too late to pursue the Lord!

Did you know Mother Teresa…
Was born as Agnes in 1910, in what is now Macedonia; at the time it was part of the Ottoman Empire.
Her rather wealthy family was of Albanian descent, but her father died when she was just eight.
After his death, the family struggled financially, but her mother instilled in young Agnes the importance of leading a Christian life and serving the less fortunate.
When she became a nun near Dublin, she was named after Saint Thérèse of Lisieux!
These socks remind us of who Mother Teresa was before she was, well, Mother Teresa! Every saint was once a young girl, a dreaming teenager, and an ambitious young woman.

Chiara is truly a saint for our times. Her love story is so inspiring, and her experiences as a mother (losing both of her children just hours after their birth) is heartbreaking. Shortly after the birth of her healthy son, Chiara died from a brief but intense struggle with cancer at her home on 13 June 2012, dressed in her wedding gown.

Saint Zélie Martin was the mother of Saint Therese of Lisieux. Zélie lived her maternity deeply, writing, “When we had our children, our ideas changed somewhat...Thenceforward we lived only for them; they made all our happiness and we would never have found it save in them. In fact, nothing any longer cost us anything; the world was no longer a burden to us. As for me, my children were my great compensation, so that I wished to have many in order to bring them up for Heaven.” In 1877, Zélie died of breast cancer.

Saint Jacinta was one of the visionaries at Fatima in Portugal who received messages from the Blessed Mother, urging us to pray the rosary, ask for the Lord’s mercy and to do acts of penance. Saint Jacinta was only ten years old when she died, making her the youngest saint in the Catholic Church (who was not martyred). The youthful vibe of these socks reminds us of this little shepherdess who was known to name her sheep.
